What you need to know

Treasury bonds are long term, ideally suited for pension and Superannuation funds.Bonds are auctioned regularly by the Central Bank on behalf of the government, and bids are accepted only via Primary Dealers. There is an active Secondary Market for Bonds with Primary Dealers providing liquidity via two-way pricing. A Treasury Bond is a tradable security issued by the Government in order to finance their borrowing requirement.

Some key features of Treasury Bonds are:

  • Interest and maturity proceeds are guaranteed by the Government.
  • No withholding tax will be deducted from the earnings.
  • Your investment is secure as there is zero default risk.
  • Pre- determined fixed rate throughout the life period of the Bond.

Eligibility to apply for Treasury Bills:

  • Resident individuals.
  • Corporate bodies incorporated in Sri Lanka.
  • Foreign institutional investors including country funds, regional funds or mutual funds.
  • Corporate bodies incorporated outside Sri Lanka.
  • Citizens of foreign states whether residing in Sri Lanka or outside Sri Lanka.
  • Non-resident Sri Lankans.
